Written by Thomas Mann.
Two short novels by master Thomas Mann토토사이트, who is called the pinnacle of 20th-century German literature, came out at the same time as Minumsa’s ‘Shotsal Bookstore’ edition.
‘Deceit’ is the last work of Thomas Mann’s life written in 1953, and it is a novel that definitively shows his literary subject consciousness and secret desire.
After the loss of her husband, Rosalie von Tümmler, who loves nature, spends peaceful days with her daughter, Anna, who is an artist, and her son, Edouard, who is about to enter college. Then one day, when Ken Keaton, a private tutor from the United States, enters the house, the fate of the family takes an unexpected turn.
Critic and philosopher Theodor Adorno said of this work, “‘Deceit’, which shows the tragedy of a false life, breaks all the rules and brings us great shock.” He said, “I feel an infinite sense of liberation through this work.”
‘Died in Venice’ is a story in five chapters by Prussian national writer Gustav Aschenbach, who died of an infectious disease while traveling in Venice.
Through the image of Aschenbach, who loathes his aging skin and wanders through the maze of Venice in pursuit of the handsome boy Tachio, the artist fiercely digs into issues such as desire, body, death, and temptation.
This work, which is considered a masterpiece that shows Mann’s genius without regret, was made into a film by Italian film master Luchino Visconti.
Ahn Sam-hwan, professor emeritus of the Department of German Literature at Seoul National University, who wrote the commentary, commented, “It shows the highest degree of completeness that a short story can offer in terms of form and content.”
