A left-hander with 48 wins in the KBO is still going strong in the major leagues.
Brooks Reilly (35, New York Mets) pitched another great game. Down 1-2 in the top of the eighth inning of a home game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Citi Field in Flushing, N.Y., on Aug. 27, he pitched one inning of scoreless baseball with one strikeout and one walk.
Starter Justin Verlander had pitched five scoreless innings before right-hander Drew Smith stepped in with two runs in one inning. Railey was unable to add to his hold as he came on with the bases loaded. He is still tied for second in the National League with Peter Strazeke (Milwaukee Brewers) with 14 on the season. Strazek did not pitch on this day.
Railey got off to a shaky start, walking leadoff hitter Luis Urias in the top of the eighth inning, trailing 1-2. He mixed in a cutter, changeup, and sweeper, but the pitches were well outside the strike zone. But he got Blake Perkins to hit a cutter and then induced a grounder to third base with his sinker. The highlight was a battle with 2018 National League MVP Christian Yelich. He fired five sweepers and got a foul-tipped strikeout to end the inning. Yelich, who signed a nine-year, $215 million extension in the 2019-2020 offseason, has seen a modest decline in performance, but he’s still a force to be reckoned with. As for Reilly, he certainly stroked his ego.
Railey has a 0.235 BABIP and 1.26 WHIP this season, which is slightly better than his 0.189 BABIP and 0.97 WHIP in 2022 with Tampa Bay. It’s also worth noting that his BABIP is lower against righties (0.180) than lefties (0.288). He worked diligently, appearing in 33 games, the most on the team behind Adam Octavino (34).
After this season, the two-year, $10 million contract that Gurley signed with the Tampa Bay Rays will be up in the 2021-2022 free agency market.
